Regarded as the global forum for design, Design Miami/ Basel is a celebration of design culture and commerce. Occurring alongside the Art Basel fairs each December in Miami, USA, and each June in Basel, Switzerland, it brings together the most influential collectors, gallerists, curators, designers and critics from across the globe.
This year the Design at Large and Design Curio exhibitions return for the fourth and third time. The Design Curio exhibition invites contributors to present cabinets of curiosity throughout the fair and for the first time, the ambitious, large-scale Design at Large installation will be conceived by notable fashion designer, Thom Browne. Design at Large
Design at Large presents large-scale works of historical and contemporary design and showcases ambitious architectural installations. The 2017 edition is curated, for the first time, by American fashion designer Thom Browne. Known for his conceptual installations, Browne will exhibit some of the most important desks from the last one hundred years, including pieces from Jean Prouvé and Ron Arad, beside the set installation from his FW14 men’s runway show.
Alongside the significant desks in design history, the exhibition will be animated by a choreographed performance focusing on young design students and their creative interactions with the installation. The performance will explore the recent shift in traditional work styles and how the desk typology is being reconsidered for today’s changing work environments.
Design Curio is Design Miami’s new exhibition platform which invites designers, curators, innovators and gallerists to present cabinets of curiosity throughout the fair. This year Curio will offer snapshots into today’s design landscape through ten focused vignettes interspersed throughout the gallery program.
Spanning the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, each presentation draws from artists and designers whose work intersects with film, fashion, jewelry, porcelain, architecture and performance. We’ve outlined our must-see exhibitions this year…
88 Gallery Presents Robert Goossens (1927-2016)
88 Gallery has curated a rare visual collection of the life and work of the late Robert Goossens, the renowned artist and designer of fashion houses Yves Saint Laurent and Chanel. The presentation will feature a selection of his iconic pieces including a gilt-bronze mirror and ornate chandelier for Chanel.
Suzanne Syz Art Jewels Presents Alex Israel
Suzanne Syz, renowned for her highly original jewelry designs, has collaborated with artist Alex Israel for this installation. Part of a series in which contemporary artists are invited to reinvent the classic jewelry box, it will feature five one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces, each contained within a box made from painted ceramic and mouthblown glass. The notable artist also designed the concept for Syz’s booth which includes vintage furniture, a frozen yogurt machine and wallpaper that represents glass bricks.

Oscar Humphries Presents Teatro Mollino
In 1952 architect, photographer and designer Carlo Mollino collaborated with architect Aldo Morbelli to design the interior of the RAI Auditorium in Torino. Since its renovation, the building has been drastically changed and the majority of its chairs lost. For this installation, Oscar Humphries brings together a selection of the original chairs made by Mollino and has recreated the theater for which they were originally designed.
Design Miami/ Basel will run from June 13th – June 18th 2017 in Basel, Switzerland, and between December 6th and 10th 2017 in Miami, USA. For more information and to buy tickets visit the Design Miami/ Basel website.
