How many times have you rushed out the house in the morning leaving a trail of destruction behind you, only to return home letter regretting it? There are steps you can take to put a spring back in your step when you get home from work each evening – it’s surprising how a few simple touches around your household can make the evening feel like it’s yours to enjoy.
The first place you’ll see is your hallway: be sure to leave it in a tidy state as you go out in the morning so that you’re not walking straight back into ‘to do’ list. Consider putting a vase of flowers in the hall to greet you – blooms have been shown to have an immediate impact on happiness, as well as fostering increased contact between loved ones.
Perhaps you’re the type that flees the house in the morning with the dishes in the sink and the curtains still drawn. In that case, you can easily brighten up your return to the living room by letting the light in before you leave for work, and clearing the sofa so that the first moments of rest in the evening come about unhindered. Getting those dishes done while the sun’s still rising is a bit more of an ask, but they will give you back fifteen minutes in the evening when you’re tired; and if you can really get yourself organized in the morning, you can even make an early start on your dinner – ensuring you’ll eat properly, and with less hard work, come teatime.
Finally – or perhaps firstly – the bedroom! Little can be more relaxing at bedtime than finding your bed made and your pyjamas laid out – so make sure it’s the first thing you do when you get out of bed in the morning.
