Tom Dixon’s obsession with materiality, manufacturing and form begun in 1975 during his pottery A levels and life drawing classes. He was projected into the design world after his first lesson in oxy-acetylene welding in 1983. Ostensibly learnt in a bid to repair his broken motorcycle, Tom quickly applied the manufacturing technique to transform scrap metal into a range of semi-functional objects.
In 1987, a doodle of a chicken took Dixon from self-production into the Italian luxury goods industry. After several mutations, the doodle was transformed into the iconic S-chair; a unique sculptural seat that achieved a place in the permanent collection in the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.
In 1992 a shop was opened in London’s Notting Hill to provide a selling platform for fresh designs. Objects from Droog, Inflate and Michael Young were sold alongside Tom’s own design creations and eight years later in 2002, he was awarded with an O.B.E for services to design at Buckingham Palace.
The Tom Dixon brand was founded in 2002 in partnership with David Begg. Setting base in London, production started on a line of extruded plastic products and the brand quickly grew to open offices and distribution centres in New York and Hong Kong.
